Badminton Court Flooring: Types and Differences in Floor Materials

The surface of a badminton court is crucial for the sport, as a good floor provides excellent protection for players.

A standard badminton court floor is typically composed of 3–4 pieces of PVC floor tiles. The total area should be no less than 108 square meters, with the main playing area marked out to standard dimensions of 13.40 meters in length, 5.18 meters in width for singles courts, and 6.10 meters in width for doubles courts. Different Materials for Badminton Court Surfaces

Badminton flooring can be categorized into cement flooring, wooden flooring, PU plastic panels, interlocking floating floor tiles, and PVC flooring.

Cement floors accelerate wear on shoe soles, reducing the lifespan of badminton shoes. Even the best badminton shoes will be affected by frequent friction on cement floors. Additionally, cement floors are too hard, and landing after a jump without proper technique can cause injuries to the knees, ankles, and other areas due to the lack of cushioning.

Wooden floors are significantly better than cement floors, with a longer lifespan. They also have shock-absorbing and vibration-damping properties. Due to their durability, many schools and large sports venues use wooden floors for badminton courts.

PU plastic boards and plastic interlocking floor tiles are commonly used in outdoor schoolyards, residential areas, and parks. They offer average protective effects but have relatively low costs.

PVC badminton court flooring:

Badminton floor mats refer to PVC badminton floor material and TPU eco-friendly floors. A single badminton court is typically composed of four small floor mats joined together, secured with PVC welded lines and adhesive tape. These are specifically designed for indoor badminton courts and are currently a very popular flooring material for badminton, as well as the primary product manufactured by our factory. Olympic Games and other international and national events all use badminton flooring. PVC flooring is the most commonly seen flooring material used in indoor sports venues. PVC flooring refers to flooring produced using polyvinyl chloride (PVC) materials. It is an environmentally friendly, non-toxic, renewable resource made primarily from polyvinyl chloride and its copolymers, with additives such as fillers, plasticizers, stabilizers, and pigments. PVC flooring has excellent shock-absorbing properties, is slip-resistant, and wear-resistant, making it an ideal material for badminton flooring. It can reduce the impact pressure on athletes' joints, protecting them from injury. It is used in sports such as tennis, badminton, and table tennis.

Common surface patterns for badminton court mats

Crystal Sand pattern: The crystal sand flooring surface features a sand-textured pattern, which can be further categorized into coarse sand, fine sand, embossed patterns, and paper-textured patterns. This pattern consists of randomly arranged small raised particles on the surface, effectively increasing friction and helping to absorb sweat that may accumulate on the floor. It is classified as a mid-to-high-grade product. However, compared to standard-grade applications, it has two drawbacks: higher cost and more challenging maintenance and cleaning. The standard thickness is 4.5 mm. Crystal sand is a professional sports floor for badminton courts, and we hold BWF certification. Its texture meets international competition standards, designed based on the principles of running and directional movement in professional badminton. The surface has high friction and can quickly disperse sweat, reducing the risk of injury. Gem pattern: The gemstone-patterned badminton flooring uses fiberglass non-woven fabric and a bidirectional polyester grid stabilizing layer internally, effectively preventing stretching, deformation, or bubbling. The surface texture is easy to clean, with vibrant colors and a matte finish that does not interfere with performance due to sunlight or lighting reflections. This is a mid-to-high-end product with an added stabilizing grid layer, typically chosen for commercial badminton courts. Standard thickness: 4.5 mm. The gemstone pattern sports flooring is a highly cost-effective, multi-functional product suitable for various venues such as table tennis, badminton, tennis, and gyms. Made from 100% pure PVC premium raw materials, the scientifically formulated material ratio ensures the stability of all product performance parameters, including rebound rate, friction coefficient, and energy return, maintaining them at optimal levels.

Litchi pattern: The litchi pattern is a common design for badminton flooring, widely used in most badminton courts due to its cost-effectiveness, mature and stable product quality, and high slip resistance. The standard thickness for lychee pattern flooring is 4.5mm. Lychee-patterned flooring is a PVC sports flooring option with a simpler production process and lower cost, typically used in private badminton courts or facilities with limited budgets. It is considered an early-generation product for badminton courts. Lychee-patterned flooring was among the first to enter the Chinese market, where the market was relatively unregulated at the time. This type of flooring is categorized as a mass-market option for badminton court flooring.

Summary

The underlayment beneath PVC sports flooring is also crucial for comfort. Laying flooring directly on cement floors can feel very hard. Some courts use suspended plastic panels as underlayment, which is significantly more comfortable than cement floors and offers a very comfortable structure. The most common underlayment is wooden flooring. Raised wooden flooring has shock-absorbing properties, and when combined with PVC flooring, it provides the best shock absorption and a very comfortable structure. International competitions use a structure with wooden floors topped with PVC flooring.
