International Standards: Core Dimensions of Badminton Court Mats

Overall Court:

Badminton World Federation (BWF) Gold Standard: (Doubles) 13.4 meters long x 6.1 meters wide (43.96 feet long x 20.01 feet wide, commonly referred to as 44 feet x 20 feet), total area 129.6 square meters (1,395.0034 sq. ft), floor color: grass green.

Why is precision critical? Space must be reserved inside the boundary lines to the edge of the mat to ensure athletes can safely retrieve the shuttlecock without stepping off the mat. A dimensional error exceeding 5% may lead to out-of-bounds misjudgments or increased risk of sprains!

Singles-specific zone:

Width narrowed to 5.18 meters (approximately 17 feet)

The doubles sideline “transforms” into the singles boundary, and the mat width directly affects the fairness of singles competition.

Key Markings and Net Height:

The front service line is 1.98 meters (6.5 feet) from the net

The doubles back service line is 0.76 meters (2.5 feet) from the baseline

The net's central height is precisely 1.524 meters (5 feet), with side heights of 1.55 meters (5 feet 1 inch)

Court Line and Accessible Space Requirements:

The court must have clear boundaries, with all court lines 40 millimeters (approximately 0.13 feet) wide. The color of the court lines should preferably be white. According to international competition regulations, the minimum clearance above the entire court must be 9 meters (approximately 29.5 feet). Within this height, there must be no beams or other obstacles. Within 2 meters (6.56 feet) of the court perimeter, there must be no obstacles. There must be a minimum distance of 2 meters between any two adjacent courts.

Badminton court lighting standards: 500–750 lux

Professional tip: Home or club courts typically use a 44x20-foot full mat, while professional competition venues add an additional safety zone around the perimeter (at least a 1-meter/3.3-foot buffer zone) to prevent collisions and injuries.
